Vegan Rice Back At Taco Bell!

I just wanted to let everyone know that the vegan rice at Taco Bell is back again!

There was this weird thing that happened with their rice recently. They came out with vegan rice and launched their vegan menu, then suddenly started adding dairy to their rice in the form of butter, and it was no longer an animal-product-free rice. But now their vegan rice is back and the old butter rice is off the menu completely. This vegan rice is currently the only rice on the menu so that there will be no confusion as to which rice is safe for vegans to eat. Pheeeewwwww!

Just When You Think Canadian Seal Hunts Couldn't Get Any Worse

Just when you think the horrific slaughter of seal in Canada couldn't get any worse, it somehow does. How could it be any worse, you ask? I read an article by Sheryl Fink from the Director of Canadian Wildlife Campaigns at the International Fund for Animal Welfare which just confirms my disgust in the human race. Canada has decided to start the senseless killing of innocent beings seal hunt early this year... during pup nursing season!

Imagine for one moment that you are a mama seal, protecting and nurturing your newborn, nursing and bonding with that child, then a spineless hunter slaughters you both. Even if they can distinguish between the genders and try to only target the males, which is almost impossible to do and trust me they don't care, imagine being that new family and the trauma that comes with other seals being slaughtered. This unimaginably cruel practice must be stopped. First let's voice our outrage on that fact that the very minute protection that wildlife does in fact have, is being ripped away from them. What's next, entire species of animals are just wiped off the earth? Not like that hasn't happened before right? Why are we going in the wrong direction? We should be protecting wildlife and moving away from barbaric acts and start living in the modern civilized times that evolution and technology has afforded us.

Please start by giving Sheryl's article a read. She explains why starting the hunt early is not only more cruel, it won't work for their purpose and it equates to senseless killing - so there's no point to this, Then, contact Canadian officials and Fisheries Minister Dominic Leblanc to voice your concern for the early hunt and this inhumane practice in general. Ask for the abolishment of Canadian seal hunting, once and for all.

Thank you for all your activism! We are winning this fight for equality for ALL.

The Dirty Vegan Cookbook

Howdy!

For anyone who hasn't read the news about my vegan cookbook on social media, it is coming along very well and will be released this Fall.

This cookbook is everything you'd expect from me: cheesy, gooey, buttery, sweet, savory, delicious (and everything in between) recipes for any occasion. This book will change the world, I just know it. Veganism has been scientifically proven to be the best lifestyle for the health of humans, the environment and of course for the animals. My cookbook is your one-stop resource for how to eat and cook vegan in the easiest way possible. I've taken the guesswork out of it because it is crucial to be including animal-free products in your diet, and I want everyone to be able to do it. You don't need fancy or hard-to-find ingredients to follow any of these recipes; this book is unlike any other vegan cookbook. Put it this way, if you make any one of these recipe for a non-vegan, I bet you'll make a believer out of them.

Here is the link to sign up for e-mail news about The Dirty Vegan Cookbook and you can also pre-order from this page as well. I recommend reserving your copy to ensure you won't have to wait or struggle to find a copy when they sell out, and you'll be able to get your copy when it is released.

The Dirty Vegan Cookbook is available everywhere books are sold. If you are unable to pre-order online, you can call your local Barnes and Noble or book retailer and reserve over the phone or in person. I've personally called the wonderful folks at B&N to confirm this because I know people like to visit the store to do things in person, I prefer that interaction as well.

Also, sorry if I have neglected this blog for a couple of months - writing a cookbook is much harder work than I thought it would be. But you know what they say, the best books are the ones that the author absolutely obsessed over, making it an easy and effortless read for the user. Maya Angelou said something like that, about when she wrote her books. Hang on, let me go get the actual quote because I think I absolutely butchered that one - be right back...

Got it! I'm not going to admit how long it took me to find this excerpt:

"Will I write a sentence that will just float off the page? Easy reading is damn hard writing. But if it’s right, it’s easy. It’s the other way round, too. If it’s slovenly written, then it’s hard to read. It doesn’t give the reader what the careful writer can give the reader." -Maya Angelou

I have been agonizingly particular about every tiny detail of this book. It is very important to me that, for animals, for the cause, this cookbook is perfect. I wanted it to be such fun to read and with instructions so detailed but simple and easy to understand, that anyone can go vegan, and they'll be absolutely compelled to. Please check it out: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/557574/the-dirty-vegan-cookbook-by-catherine-gill/

Also, there is another reason for my brief hiatus on this page - well two actually. One: they deleted the Blogger app, which made it so easy for me to post anywhere or anytime. Two: I discovered the new plant-based social app, Vegan Amino, which is void of politics or trolls and is all vegan, all the time. Here's a link to my Amino page, you should definitely check it out; this is where I've been microblogging (besides on Twitter, which is where I hang out most): http://aminoapps.com/page/vegan/2520449/thedirtyvegan

But no worries, I will be posting here on thedirtyvegan.com regularly once again, going forward. I've been told by many people that they use this website as a recipe archive and resource due to how well I labeled the posts, so I'm happy that even when I took a little time off from blogging to write this book, this site is still a useful vegan source.

Ok, that's all for today. You know how I can go on-and-on. And for now, the Dirty Vegan is signing off. Peace and love.

Vegan Road Trip!

Hello from the road!

This is day two of my vegan road trip. I am also living proof that you CAN survive on just Veggie Straws and almond butter. Haha, just kidding. Sorta.

Here is my view RIGHT NOW...

Not that glamorous. But it helps to see the beauty in everything, which I do.

Last night we saw a DOUBLE RAINBOW...which was an especially awesome sight! It was directly over our hotel and I posted a picture of that on Twitter.

Stay tuned for more posts from me. When we get to our destination, there will be LOTS of vegan food pics and other things that I find cool to share, and hope that you find interesting as well.

Let's Share Kids Stories Online!

So, I thought of a pretty neat idea. Let's make videos of us reading our favorite kiddo books with our wee ones, and post them on YouTube. That way, we have a community, and essentially a library, of children's books to watch with our kids when our very own selection seems to be getting stale. That way our children can have the luxury of hearing all types of stories, from all around the world.

My daughter has quite the collection of books, so I will start posting videos of us reading them. Please do the same!

I will try my best to tame my Italian accent. However, I will not hold back on the sillies! Silliness is simply the best.

If you aren't a parent, you can still participate. Just record yourself reading a favorite from when you were a child.

Can't wait to see these videos! Cheers!

Welcome to CrazyVille, Population: Lots.

I've been blogging since 2010. During this time as a writer, I have apparently touched some lives. I get lots of feedback from readers, whether they are emails, tweets, or meeting people at events (or even just out and about at places like Whole Foods!). I have gotten heart-warming emails from people telling me that I have encouraged them to go vegan, to change their lives, gave them courage to tell their doctors or their children's doctors (and "stick to their guns") about their vegan lifestyle, armed them with information that gives them strength to live a different lifestyle than their friends, family, and co-workers, helped their family lives by sharing recipes that they make and enjoy as a family, inspired them with my words, and so many other beautiful things that make my blogging such a special act for me to take part in. Whenever I receive this touching feedback, it is truly surreal and flattering, because I still think that I'm a capacious bore and I'm still surprised that ya'll like to read what I have to say. Thank you for that. And if you have stuck with me since 2010, you'll know how much I love the old saying, "the sweet ain't as sweet without the sour". With that being said, I have to share some of the zany feedback that I get too. I get a lot of crazy-town stuff, but here are a few standouts that are pretty amusing...

  • I have had people ask why I care so much about animals but don't care about the vegetables's feelings.
  • I was sampling out my vegan baked good once and a woman walked up to my table. I said, "these baked goods have no animal products, no GMOs, no artificial ingredients, etc.", and she said to me, "and they also have no taste".
  • When I was pregnant someone once told me that my daughter is going to be mad at me for not feeding her cheeseburgers.
  • People have told me that tofu is a gross alternative to meat.
  • I like to post about vegan options that I find at restaurants. Someone once said that I had to have eaten non-vegan food because they know that restaurants do not serve vegan food.
  • I hear this one a lot, "I used to be vegan, but I got sick and had to go back to eating meat". If these people were eating a healthy vegan diet, chances are they were detoxing all of the toxins out of their bodies from years of unhealthy eating. That could be why they felt sick, if they were even sick to begin with.
  • Someone told me that soy beans are poison.
  • I'll get random emails and tweets from people telling me that they just ate meat and that it was so delicious (gag!).
  • Or people telling me that I don't get enough protein.

The point of this post is to remind you not to let antagonistic stuff get you down. Without the negative, the positive stuff wouldn't seem as wonderful. Simply, the sweet wouldn't be as sweet without the sour. And for now, the Dirty Vegan is signing off. Have a happy day!

Delicious Review, Treat for YOU too!

Okay, I am going to admit it. I just pigged out on snacks. However, I am not in a snack food coma, oh no not at all. I am actually feeling a lasting burst of energy that I had for about an hour now. What did I eat, you ask? Chocolate? Something with caffeine in it, perhaps? Nope. I ate kale. You heard me, kale. You know, that green stuff that has tons of vitamins and nutritional goodness in it. And the energy is a gentle, non-jittery burst, just like when I juice fruits and vegetables. The cool thing about all of this is that I ate this kale just like anyone would eat chips or cheesy-doodles. Mentally, I feel like I should feel guilty after my extreme kale-fest, but my body is telling me no way Mama, you ate well. If you are wondering what this magical kale snack is, feast your eyes...

Kale chips, it is! Kale Krunch from Alive & Radiant/ Kaia Foods! Let me first say, kale is a super food. Kale is high in iron, vitamin K, and low in calories. It is also loaded with antioxidants and is a great source of calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin A. It is a great detox food (yeah we all know swimsuit season is fast approaching, please don't remind me that my detox diet should be starting soon)! With all that being said, Alive & Radiant Foods does kale like no other - did you hear me - NO OTHER. I'm salivating at the very thought of these, ever since the first taste. Kale Krunch makes it easy to detox and live healthy; when you have snacks like these to eat, you are good to go!

I tried the Quite Cheezy flavor first (pictured above), and fell in love. These kale chips have red bell peppers, organic cashews, nutritional yeast, and chia seeds, adding to the super food qualities. What a super snack! With significant vitamin percentages, protein, and fiber, for a cheezy snack, you just can't go wrong with these. But above all else, these taste downright DIRTY delicious! I felt like I was doing something wrong as I was inhaling these kale chips... then the energy boost kicked in and I seriously felt like my body was absorbing every single calorie of these delightful chips for the sake of good. These just feel good for my body. Period.

Here is a peek into the Spicy Superfood flavor bag. These are mighty spicy, but in a wonderful way. I've eaten spicy before, and this Kale Krunch had my nose running, but my mouth was not at all on fire. These are yummy-licious but also pack a nutritional punch with ingredients like cashews, chia seeds, nutritional yeast, spirulina, turmeric, maca root, and cayenne. All of which, are fabulous health foods. I got a nifty boost of energy from these especially, and just had a great time munching on them.

Both flavors are amazing, but if I had to choose, I would pick Quite Cheezy as my fave. Let's hope I never have to choose and they make both flavors forever and ever. For the sake of honest journalism, I must report the only drawback to these snacks. I had lots of kale in my teeth and all over! Did I mind? Not a chance! For these delicious green goodies, I would cover my body in kale.

You are probably thinking, where do I get my hands on these scrumptious little morsels? Well, you can go to Kaia's Alive & Radiant Store (http://shop.kaiafoods.com/) AND I have one better for you. Since you know you are going to buy these anyway, I have a real treat for my awesome readers! Use the coupon code "thedirtyvegan" and you will receive 10% off of your next purchase of $20 or more. If you are anything like me, you'll need this code because you will likely make these kale chips a part of your daily routine. After one bite, you will understand.

If they had these when I was growing up, I would have never even touched a potato chip or cheese curl! And for now, the Dirty vegan is signing off. I hope you have a cheezy, kale-filled day!

Hello, From BabyVille!

Hello Everyone! I wanted to check in and let you all know that mom, baby, (and dad too) are all well! I am recovering from a c-section. Baby was in a breech position, one that would have made it potentially dangerous for her if we tried to deliver vaginally, therefore we did a planned cesarean and all went well! I didn't even need any pain meds...well, I refused them, I probably could have used them, but as they say, "Mind over Matter".

I am planning my upcoming blog posts for later this week so keep an eye out for them. Right now we are enjoying our little family, nurturing baby, and I am recovering. We are over-the-moon happy and in love with our wonderful baby!

The baby is healthy, happy, and gorgeous! She is thriving on my vegan breast-milk, and I that is working out really well for us. I am eating like a maniac, I actually have a huge appetite even more so than when I was pregnant. I am still taking my vegan prenatal vitamins and I am also drinking Mother's Milk tea, which really has the milk pouring out like mad. Sorry for the details, but if it helps other mothers out there who are breastfeeding, I'm glad I shared. This tea is organic, vegan-friendly, herbal, caffeine-free, kosher, and safe for mom and baby.

Okay Folks, I'm going to get back to my little angel now. Teaser: the next blog post will be my special trick on how to get rid of postpartum bloat. Works like a charm! And for now, the Dirty Vegan is signing off. Lots of love and sweet baby smiles to you!

Just In Case You Were Wondering...

Hello Everyone! Just in case you were wondering why I haven't posted anything in a while, it is because me and Mr. Dirty Vegan are expecting our first baby! And we have been busy, busy, busy! Trust me, you don't want any of the recipes of some of the weird vegan concoctions I've been putting together...

However, now that my weird food aversions (who has an aversion to Tofurky "sausage"??!? This girl! Well not anymore, I can finally eat them again) are starting to subside, I can post the yummy things that I have been eating. You don't have to be pregnant to eat like me, just don't feel guilty about it afterwards and you're golden. When I post my prego recipes, I will give you a few options to cut back the calories since not all of my readers are required to eat an additional 300- 400 calories daily (or more, who's watching?).

Keep an eye out for my upcoming posts. They will include tips, tricks, and pictures (hello to the most illegal looking food out there!). I have been enjoying veggie nachos loaded with things like beans, salsa, hummus, guacamole, vegan "sour cream", and LOTS of Daiya cheese. I have also discovered new vegan food finds that are so Dirty you wouldn't believe them. So I will be sharing that stuff too. And I will throw in a few belly shots so you can scope out the adorable bump I've been sporting these days. And for now, the Dirty Vegan is signing off. Hope you have a sun-shining-like-vegan-cupcakes-and-babies-day!

VeganMofo Starts October 1st!

The Dirty Vegan will be participating in VeganMofo. This is a blogging event that vegan bloggers partake in, in which we vow to blog about only vegan food for the entire month. That means, I will be getting all my non-food vegan talk out of my system the rest of this month, and only blogging about food for all of October. My focus will be on Comfort Food, which is not a stretch from the recipes I do on here all the time. However, I'm going to get extra Dirty with it, think Vegan Paula Dean! These are going to be the type of recipes that will carry you into the transition from summer to fall. These recipes will be perfect for and complimentary to cool autumn weather. Thirty days of awesome and comforting vegan recipes that are perfect for fall; who is as excited as I am??!!

In November I will resume my combination of recipes, food talk, animal talk, product reviews, and also all things non-food vegan! Until then...get ready to eat like a Dirty Vegan baby!

My Birthday and the Dirty Awards

My birthday is this week. I plan on eating plenty of vegan cake (and pretty much anything else I want - doesn't seem out of the ordinary at all actually). In honor of this joyous occasion, I have decided to start the annual Dirty Awards. This concludes this evening's Dirty Awards. Drive home safely. Stay Dirty. Salutations. And for now, the Dirty Vegan is signing off. Happy Birthday to Me!

A Starfish Story

This is a true story about a starfish...

I had a meeting in a beach town. It was a gorgeous day outside; sunny and bright with a nice summer breeze. I put on a pair of preppy plaid short-shorts, tucked in a crisp white fitted button down, put on a cute pair of sandals to showcase my tropical pedi, and accessorized with a cute belt and pair of sunglasses. The day was starting out great.

I was driving along and realized my vehicle was running out of gas. I stopped at a station close to where my meeting was located. Something compelled me to pull up to a pump that was kind of out of the way. I get out of the car and go around towards the station and something on the ground quickly caught my attention. There was a pile of dead starfish on the ground. I almost had to pinch myself; nothing these days should shock me, although they always do. There was a rock near them and it appeared that the starfish had been smashed to death. They were all dried out, bloody, and hard. I had to double check to be sure. One of the starfish appeared to be alive. I now have a rescue situation on my hands.

I got myself into rescue mode and thought quickly. I don't know how long Starfish has been out here, but judging by the others, I knew I didn't have much time. I ran into the gas station's convenience store. I tell the attendant and ask for a container with water so that I can get this starfish in some water and figure out my next step. I was told that they didn't have anything to give me. At that point, I started becoming cynical and disappointed in my fellow humankind, as I so often do. For one, someone did this to these starfish, and two, no one was helping me. I quickly grabbed supplies and pay for them. I bought a foam cooler and room temperature bottled waters; complaining to the attendant the entire time while I was checking out, on how terrible I think it is that they allow people to abuse animals outside of their business and do nothing about it. I asked them to look at the surveillance tape and do something about this. I was cashed out and dashed back outside to Starfish.

Two gentlemen who had overheard me inside the store, helped me outside. Whether they were helping the girl in short-shorts or helping the starfish, I was glad to receive assistance and was grateful. I was feeling a little better about my fellow mankind, but not much. We gently got Starfish into the cooler and I was almost certain Starfish was still alive. I thanked my helpers and quickly sped off.

I controlled the temperature in my car with some A/C and some fresh air from the windows. It was comfortable and I was hoping it was okay for Starfish too. I arrived at my meeting, explained I had a rescue starfish in my car, met, and was out of there in a matter of minutes. I then head off to the beach, which was not far at all - literally three minutes, perhaps.

I arrive at the beach and explain my discovery to the attendant at the booth. He let me park and didn't even charge me for it. Regaining my faith in fellow humankind...slowly. I clutch the foam cooler containing Starfish, and powerwalk to the beach. I come across a lifeguard and told him what I was doing. He pointed me in the right direction to the best place to release the starfish, which was a far edge of the beach, full of rocks and seaweed and no humans to disturb this starfish. I thanked him for his assistance and zoomed over to the quiet spot of the beach.

I happen to know that if you place a starfish upside-down in water and it is alive, it will quickly right itself. I kneel down and notice that the current is kind of strong as waves come splashing into the rocks. For a second I feel like I should bring Starfish home to rehabilitate and then release in a few weeks. However, I don't know what starfish eat and have no idea how to properly care for one. The lifeguard did mention earlier that starfish heal themselves very quickly and can even regenerate lost limbs. Starfish only had some scrapes, so I decide to carry on with the release.

I place Starfish upside-down in the ocean and wait. Starfish was still. I began to worry that Starfish didn't make it or that maybe Starfish was too weak to right itself. Then, just like a miracle, Starfish did a sort of wiggle flip-over thing. Starfish was right-side up. I worried about the current, but then watched as Starfish swam against the current into the ocean! It was a funny type of swimming I've never seen before. I didn't even know that starfish swim like that. It was very slow and gentle, almost like a glide. I now knew Starfish was strong enough to swim into the ocean against the waves splashing in, and make it look like a simple task to boot! I knew for sure Starfish would be okay. I felt better. I felt happy for Starfish. Although, I also felt sad for the others that had died at that gas station.

I walked back towards my car and stopped to tell the lifeguard the good news. He was glad to hear and thanked me for what I did. It was cool, it was like the lifeguard was a guardian of the sea and appreciated that I brought one of it's inhabitants home. I then passed by the attendant in the booth. I told him about Starfish being alive and gliding away into the ocean. I expressed my sadness for the others who did not make it and how cruel it was that someone brought them there to die. He also thanked me and was very pleased that I was able to save the one that was alive. He told me The Starfish Story. I had never heard this story before. The gist of it was that saving one (or as many as you can) makes a difference and is significant. Here is the full story that I found online when I searched for it:

I drove away from the beach feeling much different than when I had first arrived. When I found the pile of starfish, I was deeply saddened and sickened by what people can do to other living beings. I see it all the time being a vegan and animal rights activist, but I never get used to it. It never gets any easier to handle, but I do work harder and with a sense of urgency everyday. No creature is too small to be respected, loved, or saved. Of coarse, even starfish deserve a chance to live out their lives unharmed. Isn't that a given?

After meeting people who cared about my mission to save Starfish, and especially after hearing the beautiful story of caring and determination afterwards, I felt renewed. I drove off admiring the sky, the beach air, and the ocean - feeling good about the fate of Starfish, feeling good about my life's mission, and feeling good about those fellow compassionate mankind who have it within themselves to care. And for now, the Dirty Vegan is signing off.

Etsy Love!

Esty is so cool! So we've made an Etsy shop for anyone who has an existing Etsy account or who is accustomed to using Etsy. We are offering our variety pack only on our Etsy shop. If you would like to purchase single items, multiples of particular items, etc., please visit our website www.dirtyveganfoods.com. Etsy accepts Paypal, checks and money orders (along with the major credit cards) - our website accepts credit cards and we are working on adding Paypal to it soon. Both are super easy to use, but its nice that Etsy accepts those things; I know a lot of you really like it. So let's link up on Etsy too, and join the DVF circle! Cheers! :o)
